Wheelchair racer and B.C. Liberal candidate Michell Stilwell does the honours at last week’s January Junket.

Oceanside Place played host to another big successful tournament last weekend as 16 teams turned out for the 11th annual January Junket oldtimers hockey tournament.

In the end, Port Alberni won the 60’s division; the Bear Mountain Bruins won the 65’s, the Nanaimo Old Boys the 70’s, and the Mainlanders won the 75’s.

“The tournament was very successful with the teams playing some close games,” said tournament founder and longtime Panter Al Greir, adding “the dinner at the French Creek Pub was excellent and enjoyed by all the players and special thanks to our sponsors (Save-On-Foods, Pacific Western Brewers, McDonald’s and Little Qualicum Cheese Works). Without them we would be hard pressed to have the tournament.”

Also earning a big thanks for coming out early last Tuesday morning to do the ceremonial puck drop was Parksville’s wheelchair racer extraordinare turned politico Michelle Stilwell.

“These guys are amazing,” she smiled after, pointing out, “I don’t care how old you are, staying active is so important.”

Stilwell ships off for Australia this month to race in the annual Summer Down Under event.
