Parksville’s Mariah St. Pierre is on her way to the B.C. Summer Games as a member of the Vancouver Island beach volleyball team.
The 17-year-old St. Pierre, who attends Ballenas Secondary, earned the right to be one of the four players named to the team. Making the team was a great way to cap off the end of the school year and St. Pierre is now looking forward to taking part in the B.C. Summer Games.
“I’m really excited. I think it’s a great opportunity to be a part of this team and to play with the girls who made it too,” St. Pierre said.
“We had the tryouts here in Parksville last week and I was fortunate enough to be one of the four to make the team.”
St. Pierre started playing beach volleyball in Grade 8 and enjoys spending time in the sand under the sun with friends and getting a chance to kick back and play.
Right now, she’s training three days a week but that’s going to ramp up soon to five days a week including tournaments, leading to the B.C. Summer Games.
“It’s a lot of fun, being able to come out here and enjoy the weather and playing with friends,” St. Pierre said. “Getting in a good dive here and there that nobody thinks you’re going to get is always fun but it’s more just about having a good time and enjoying yourself.”
