The Ballenas Whalers junior girls volleyball team finished ninth overall, out of 24, teams at the B.C. Championships held in Surrey Nov. 25 and Nov. 26.

The Whalers survived some tough and close matches to make it into the top 16 bracket. That included an exciting win over the host team Pacific Academy. They were the top Island finishers in the tournament, with Brentwood, Nanaimo District and Isfeld placing 17th, 18th, and 22nd,respectively.

The title was won by defending champions Earl Marriot Secondary, who capped off a stellar season with a 47-1 record that included four tournaments and two championships.

The Whalers worked hard to make it to the provincials.

They received helped from many individuals and businesses in their journey and express their appreciation for all their support, including Quality Foods, Thrifty Foods, Save-on-Foods, Tim Hortons, Starbucks, Panago, Ballenas Secondary, Warwick Immigration Canada, Parksville Rotary, Mid Island Co-op, Lois Grant RE/MAX Anchor Realty and Grant Wildeman of Royal LePage Parksville.

The team will hold a bottle drive from Feb. 4 to Feb. 11 to pay back some of the pre-paid sponsorship they received. For more information, email Beth Atkinson at lymphedemanerd@gmail.com.
