Ballenas Whalers junior girls simply smashing at district volleyball championships

School to host high school North Island event Nov. 1-3

Ballenas Whalers junior girls high school volleyball team finished first as they hosted the recent district championships.

They went undefeated, winning six games in row without dropping a set. They beat Nanaimo Christian, Nanaimo District, Dover Bay, John Barsby, Wellington and Ladysmith.

The Whalers topped the tournament followed by Nanaimo District, Dover Bay, John Barsby, Nanaimo Christian, Wellington and Ladysmith.

The Whalers now host the North Island Championships, Nov. 1-3. The schools competing include Mark Isfeld, Barsby, Highland , Vanier , Nanaimo Christian, Brooks, Dover Bay, Carihi, NDSS and Wellington.

Prior to the district tournament, Ballenas school held a pep rally to support the junior girls and their goal of making it all the way to the Island championships. They are aiming to finish in the top four to earn a berth at the Islands.

Coached by Steve Dorsay, the junior Whalers team includes: Koli Kitazaki, Haley Spetch, Elise Baier, McKinley Schworan, Anjali Rutledge, Lena Schwarzer, Myanah Vandusen, Norah Hughes, Katie McCulloch, Cadie DenHaan, Cardin McLaughlin and Danielle Easthom.

The Whalers are in Pool B in the North Islands. They will play their first game against Nanaimo Christian on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Ballenas gym at 5:40 p.m. Then on Wednesday, the Whalers face Vanier at 2 p.m. and possibly at 8 p.m. as well.
