Ballenas Secondary School’s senior girls soccer team opened their 2011 playoffs on home field Thursday afternoon.
The blue and white were missing two starters Thursday — standout striker Emma Greig and starting keeper Rebecca Bonnell — and though in tough against a physical side of 49ers from Ladysmith in game one of the district playdowns, the Whalers looked to have everything under control.
Ladysmith staked Ballenas to a 1-0 lead with an own-goal about 15 minutes in and Olivia Virs buried shot low left corner from the top of the box 10 minutes later to make it 2-nil Whalers, which is how it stood at the half. For the final score complete game recap, check out Tuesday’s News.
The 49ers finished fourth in the BC High School Senior Girls Soccer’s AA South division. The Whalers went undefeated at 5-0 to lock up first in the Mid-Island division.
