On April 5 and 6 the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club held its final tournament of the indoor season.
Everyone bowled well but it was the Parksville team of Mick and Vicki Banks and Gary Robinson who not only took top spot but also claimed the Qualicum Foods Indoor Trophy.
There were 12 teams in total and it proved to be another competitive tournament.
The Parksville team of David Perry, Frankie Stemler and Ruby Bishop-Ryan took second place. Coming in third were Bill Davenport, Ruth Brodie and Martin Sichert, while fourth went to Gavin Reid, Pat Reid and Margaret Clow (both Qualicum Beach teams).
Spring is here and another indoor lawn bowling season is winding down with the leagues finishing up this past week. With many of the leagues over-subscribed, the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club had to add more league dates. Tournaments were held each month and this provided for some good competition.
“We were well supported by our club members along with bowlers from Nanaimo, Parksville and Port Alberni. Winter bowling is becoming a popular pastime and we hope to see you all back next winter,” said Jane Nielsen, coordinator for the QBLBC.
Now their attention turns to the upcoming outdoor season. First up is an open house April 26-27 (12:30-3:30 p.m.).
“The doors will be open to the public, as it gives people a chance to see what the sport of lawn bowling is all about. They can roll some bowls then sit and have a coffee and see what a great facility we have,” Nielsen said.
Opening day for the outdoor season is May 1. Along with the various club tournaments, the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club will be hosting two major open tournaments — mixed fours (May 10-11) and the mens and ladies triples (June 21-22).
Teams from up and down the Island participate along with teams from the QBLBC. This year they will be introducing a new tournament, the ladies open pairs on June 13-14. This tournament will honour Sylvia Gibb, who passed away last year.
“Sylvia was a long time member and great supporter of the club and just loved to be out lawn bowling. She was an inspiration to us all,” Nielsen said.
In addition to the many tournaments, the QBLBC will be holding evening fun leagues throughout the summer along with various “special occasion” events.
There will be ladies and men’s open draws held during weekdays and every Tuesday afternoon there will be a coach on hand for anyone looking to better their game. Add all this together with the major tournaments held by other clubs and the provincial tournaments and it all adds up to some non-stop bowling.
