The beach courts down at Parksville Community Park were packed on the weekend as Volleyball BC hosted the first stop of its Sand Series for youth aged 13-18, and the annual King and Queen of the beach competition for the older set.

“Great day,” said local beach v-ball promoter and VIU coach Shane Hyde who oversaw the event. “We set up 17 courts in the pouring rain, but the sun came out once the games started.”

There were teams from the Mainland and up and down the Island  — all told there were some 60 participants in the Sand Series and 10 players on the other side of the draw. There were no female entries this year, so there was no Queen of the Beach, but a new King was crowned in Rob Barcelos who lost his first couple sets but rebounded to run the table and take the 100 clams up for grabs.

“It was a long day,” he said after the final match. “I had to come through the back door, so lots of games.”

A reminder the second session of OOS’s league season gets underway the 1st week of July.

Spots are filling up fast for both the Youth league (Tuesdays) and Adult league (Wednesdays).
