From the rink comes word the Mid-North Extreme Female Midget A hockey team punched its ticket to the provincial championships after defeating the South Island Royals two games straight in their best of three VIAHA playoff series.
Sponsored by Ocean’s Edge Orthodontics, the Extreme team, said manager Tina NcComb, “represents the mid and north Island and is made up of a dedicated group of 15-17 year old girls from Nanaimo, Oceanside, Courtenay and Campbell River.”
Their playoff series against the Royals opened Feb. 18 in Sooke with the Extreme skating away with a 5-3 win.
Parksville’s Maddy Meyer was solid in net. Danielle Poirier and Dayna Briggs led the Extreme with two goals apiece and Ashlyn Mottershead added an empty netter.
Back at it the next day in Courtenay, the Extreme nailed down the Island title with a hard-fought 2-1 final.
Campbell River’s Scotia Bellavance scored both goals for the Extreme, while Maddy Chamberlain helped the cause with two assists.
Meyer was between the pipes for the win, and also earning props for their standup defensive play were local players Tianna Squire and Celine Tardif.
Extreme head coach Roger Chamberlain praised the girls “for their team play and strong work ethic over the last course of the season to be ready to compete when it counted most.
“A late season addition to the coaching staff, Oceanside’s Marissa Jordan, “brought a wealth of competitive experience and support for team dynamics that was a significant factor in the turnaround of the team and their recent success.”

The provincial championships will be held in Salmon Arm, March 18-23.
