The Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club recently hosted the 5th annual Sylvia Gibb Garden Bowl charity tournament.

It was a two-day ladies mixed pairs tournament that had 16 teams from the North Island. Organizer Jane Nielsen said there was some great bowling that took place. While at the end of the day no team won all their games, the winners were determined by tiebreaker rules.

First place went to Sandra Mitchell and Lynne Britz, who were presented with the Memorial Sylvia Gibb trophy. Second placed went to Kate Wilson and Merry Danarti of Parksville with third going to Joyce Findlay and Lorane Martin of Qualicum Beach and fourth spot went to Bernice Urbaniak and Jean Giszas of Nanaimo.

The tournament started in memory of Sylvia Gibb, one of QBLBC’s most beloved members, who donated her time, energy and legacy to a sport she loved. Because Gibb was an extraordinary gardener and loved colorful flowers, the annual event theme has been “colour,” said Nielsen. This is one of the few occasions where players don’t were the traditional white playing attire.

The tournament is also a charity event. This year more than $1,100 was raised from the silent auction and donations which will be going to Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs, a non-profit organization based in Qualicum Beach that matches veterans suffering from a stress injury like posttraumatic stress disorder with a compassion dog.

Nielsen said the club is grateful to all those involved who helped make the tournament a successful event.
