Despite COVID-19 restrictions, the Eaglecrest Ladies were still able to stage their annual events for the Anne Sharpe Trophy and the Marl Cup at the Eaglecrest Golf Club in Qualicum Beach.

Both trophies are named after former players and entry is restricted by age — the former to players 70 and over and the latter to younger entrants.

The contest was held on the last two Tuesdays in July, and was based on a combined net score (gross score minus handicap) for the two weeks. For the first day, competitors were grouped by handicap, and for the second, in the order of their first day’s net score.

For the Marl Cup, out of a field of 13, the first round saw Deb Hoover with net 62 holding a substantial lead over her nearest rival, Jeanne Wallace, at 71, followed by Lois Kaye with 73.

With a second-round score of net 69, for a total of 131, Hoover was easily able to maintain her lead and clinch the Marl Cup. Runner-up Suzanne Owens finished the first day at net 75, but broke 80 gross on the second day for net 62 total 137. Both Hoover and Owens are new members of the Ladies Club, and are clearly destined to offer a challenge to continuing members.

Of the 10 Anne Sharpe competitors, the leaders at the end of the first round were Bev Fedorak and Sharon Bellinger, each with net 67, followed by Helen Dunham at net 69. On the second day, Bellinger showed great consistency with another net 67 to claim the trophy with a total of 134, while Fedorak’s net 74, total 141, established her as runner-up. Liz Gillies and Georgie Higgins each finished with a net total of 150 for third and fourth places, respectively.
