From Mount Washington comes a reminder the 31st annual Vancouver Island Loppet is set to go this Saturday.
According to Barbara Kelly, the Mount Washington and Strathcona Nordic Ski Club have been busy getting things ready for the popular long distance ski race, “however, skiers should note that registration closes Thursday, April 11 at 11:59 p.m., “and absolutely no late entries will be accepted.”
Loppet for those following along at home, is Swedish for “long haul”.
The Vancouver Island Loppet is actually five events in one. There is the full loppet of 30km, a half loppet of 15 kilometres, a team loppet of 3x10 km, a youth loppet of 5 km, and a cookie loppet for ages six and under of 2 km.
Skiers travel from all over Vancouver Island, Western Canada, and as far away as Europe and New Zealand to participate in the event says Kelly, adding “it’s really a great way to end the cross-country ski season or to prepare for the Snow-to-Surf. It’s a beautiful course through rolling terrain in and out of Strathcona Park in a festive atmosphere — it should be on everyone’s bucket list.”
