Basketball season is here.

The Kwalikum Kondors senior boys basketball team kicked off their season with a dominating 86-45 win over Ladysmith 49ers in front of home fans on Tuesday night (Dec. 6).

Head coach Taylor Wilson said although it’s only their inaugural Tier 2 North Island League game it was important enough to give him the opportunity to gauge areas they need to work on to get better as the season progresses.

“For a first game, it was good,” said Wilson. “But we still have lots to polish up on the execution side of things. We won the game on talent and athleticism.”

The Kondors offence was paced by Logan Magel’s 29 points with Aiden Campbell and Bryce Melnick adding 15 and 13 points, respectively.

At halftime, the Kondors built up a sizable 35-20 lead and never let up in the third and fourth quarters much to the delight of the home fans.

“The atmosphere was great, as we had a lot of fans and the teams played off their energy,” said Wilson.

The Kondors got their first big test when they took part in one of the competitive tournaments on the Island, the Isfeld Secondary Annual Ice Invitational Tournament, Dec. 9-10.

The teams entered in the tournament included the host Isfeld, Carihi, Timberline, Royal Bay, Alberni, John Barsby of Nanaimo and St. John Brebeuf of Abbotsford.

They played two games losing to Carihi and Timberline.

Wilson said he was happy to see how the Kondors adjusted their game.

“They’re already improving,” Wilson said.
