The Island Barrel Racing club (IBR) is back for its fourth season with a race and clinic at the Coombs Rodeo Grounds this weekend.

The IBR has held three of the 22 races being held up and down the island from late March to mid September and their fourth is this Saturday (May 3) at 6 p.m., with a warm-up at 5 p.m.

It is free for spectators, but support through the purchase of 50/50 tickets is appreciated.

The IBR welcomes new members, as well as people who would like to try it but are uncertain.

For just $5, people can take part in a “time only” race, which means they will not be eligible for prize money.

The ‘time only’ gives the riders and horses a full minute in the arena with the barrels set up. Riders can work on the barrel pattern in any way they choose. They can also be timed if they like.

Horse Council B.C. insurance is required and must be provided on entry. E-mail the secretary at islandbarrelracing@hotmail.com to enter.

Professional barrel racer Katie Garthwaite from Merritt will run a barrel racing clinic Saturday and Sunday from 9-4. She was a National Finals Rodeo qualifier and Canadian Finals qualifier last year.
