The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club (PLBC) is rolling out the welcome mat for its annual open house this Friday and Saturday (April 18-19).
The club invites the public to try out one of the area’s most popular games. Carol Bucyk, PLBC marketing officer said.
“It’s a great way for people to see why we’re out here enjoying ourselves so much,” said Bucyk. “The game shares lots of similarities to curling, and I like to call it curling’s summer cousin. People who curl seem to grab onto this sport easily. It’s just a lot of fun.”
Those attending the open house should wear flat-soled shoes and comfortable clothes that allow for easy movement. You’ll get a quick overview of the club and the game, and then have the opportunity to go out to the green and play a mini game or two.
From April 22-26 the club is also offering a deal on a four-lesson package for $40 (to be deducted off the cost of the first year’s membership). Club coaches will teach the basics and get novice players game ready for the kickoff tournament at the end of April.
“Once visitors are on the green, their preconceptions of the game get blown away,” said Bucyk.
“They think it’s like bocce or bowling on grass. It’s not even close. The reality is that it’s a lot more like curling or chess and there is a lot of strategy involved. It’s challenging, friendly and fun, too!”
This year the club is hosting the Canadian National Mixed Pairs Championship in early September, which will be attracting players and fans from across the country.
