Master swim club gearing up

It's going to be another exciting year in the pool

The Ravensong Masters Swim Club is ramping up for another season and Janis Proctor wants to extend an open invitation for new members.

RMSC is open to swimmers of all levels, from beginners to competitive types, all benefitting from experienced coaches. The focus, said Janis, is on stroke development, endurance and fitness, and as such is also ideal for anyone training for triathlons.

“We swim Monday and Wednesday nights from 8-9 p.m., and Saturday mornings from 7-8 a.m.,” said Janis, pointing out it’s “a wonderful club — very friendly, fun and supportive. A non-intimidating atmosphere.

“We have simmers from 19 into their 70s,” she said, and explained that the word Masters “doesn’t refer to our swimming ability. It’s not that we’re master swimmers, it’s the age category, and you have to be 19 to be part of the club.”

Beyond the friendly confines of the club setting, members can also spread their wings and compete in Master swim meets if they so choose — there are three on the Island and a couple on the Mainland each year.

“We’ve had lots of success at them too,” she said, adding some of the members compete in the BC Seniors Games. This will be Janis’ fifth season — the married mother of two also competes in triathlons and swims competitively.

The Ravensong Masters Swim Club kicks off the new season Monday, Sept. 12. The season runs through to next June and culminates with the Qualicum Beach Triathlon in June.
