Canadian National Team coaches Dave Paetkau and Rob Geunter shared their expertise with Vancouver Island girls softball hopefuls last weekend as Oceanside Softball hosted its annual Spring Indoor Softball Camp at Arbutus Meadows Saturday and Sunday.

The camp, held on the turf of the indoor arena, featured components for player, coach and parent development, with the focus of the player camp on developing new skills and getting players ready for the upcoming season.

Paetkau, the hitting and outfield coach for the Canadian Women’s National Team, instructed players through all age groups on the fundamentals of stance, bat position and swing while leading the hitting clinic.

Geunter, who also comes from the national program, directed running the pitching clinics. Dallas Flynn, former Simon Fraser University back catcher and a current coach, worked a position-specific series of back catching clinics.

The camp also included infielding and outfielding sessions for players, with Learn to Play sessions offered to younger players new to the game each day.

Other clinics included a youth softball mental training series for players, coaches and parents; a Softball BC coaching course – Competition Intro Level 2 – and a scorekeeping seminar for parents.
