Twenty-nine down, 13 to go.

Oceanside’s Save On Foods Generals return to action this weekend with a two-game set against the Campbell River Storm — rested, hungry and ready to tear into the home stretch of the VIJHL’s 42 game regular season.

“Everybody’s back and healthy and raring to go,” an upbeat Generals’ GM and head coach Dave Johnston told The News Thursday.

The Generals gutted out a huge 2-1 win over their North Island nemesis from Comox in their final game before the break, and go into this weekend winners of eight of their last 10 games.

Everyone had to report back Jan. 4.

“The kids were really eager to get back and get together and get playing ... over the top energy,” said the longtime bench boss.

In a non-move that speaks volumes about the pieces in place, Johnston stood pat with the players he has over the holiday break. Jan. 10 marks the VIJHL’s trading deadline when each team has to have it’s 23-man roster finalized.

The Generals head into the weekend tied with the Saanich Braves for third in the seven-team league at 14-14-1. The Storm are the cellar at 9-19-1.

“We’ll have our hands full — it’s always a tough game against them,” said Johnston. “They’re a lunch bucket team that’s very difficult to play against.”

Game two of the home and home goes Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at Oceanside Place.

“Absolutely — I think we’re a team that’s capable of being a force come playoff time,” Johnston answered quickly when  asked if he’s pleased with where his team is at at this point in light of the rocky start to the season.
