Oceanside Sharks secure first win of season in Junior B lacrosse action

Team edges Nanaimo Timbermen 13-12

The Oceanside Sharks earned their first win of the season when they edged the Nanaimo Timbermen 13-12 in a Pacific Northwest Junior Lacrosse League game on May 26.

But the Sharks were not able to keep a win streak going as they dropped two home games against the Campbell River Ravens (12-9) and Westshore Bears (19-2) at Oceanside Place over the weekend.

The Sharks have been improving steadily, and the win on the road against the Timbermen was a morale-boosting one as they lost five games in row prior to that. They currently sport 1-7 record in their five-team league.

Against the Timbermen, the Sharks got off to a solid start and led 6-1 after the first. They scored another six goals in the second and survived a strong comeback by the Timbermen to secured with win.

Ben Tisdelle sparked the Sharks offence, netting five goals, with Kaelen Fourneau scoring a hat trick. Adam Fyfe had two goals with one apiece from Diego Hopkins, Cole Kenzie and Jaiden Hammill.

On May 28, the Sharks hosted the fourth-place Campbell River Ravens. The visitors took a 4-1 lead after the first and added six more in the second while the Sharks were limited to only four goals. In the third, the Sharks rallied but it fell short.

Jayden Haftner, Tisdelle, and Jaiden Hammill each scored twice, with Hopkins, Fyfe and Blake Knoll each adding a goal.

The next day, the Sharks faced the top team in the league, Westshore. It was a tough outing for the Sharks as they were shut out in the first and were limited to just a goal in each of the remaining periods. Scorers for the Sharks were Tisdelle and Knoll.

Goaltender Jordan Day, playing his first junior lacrosse match, faced 57 shots and made 38 saves to earn player of the game honours.

The Sharks hit the road on June 4 to face the Campbell River Ravens at Strathcona Gardens at 6:30 p.m. The next day they head to West Shore to take on the Bears at the Q Centre for a 1:30 p.m. clash.
