Oceanside Track and Field Club athletes impress at BC junior development track meet

Willers’ javelin throw ranks ninth in BC

Gabriel Willers spearheaded the Oceanside Track and Field Club with a gold medal javelin performance at the BC Junior Development Track and Field Championships.

The 11-year-old athlete not only took home gold, but also made the top 10 all-time provincial records in javelin when he threw an impressive distance of 30.49 metres, ranked ninth in B.C.

Willers also took home a gold medal in the shot-put and a silver in discus. He finished fourth in the long jump and tied for fifth in the high jump with fellow Oceanside Track and Field Club member Ethan Bewsey, who also landed in fourth place in the discus, eighth in 60-metre hurdles, seventh in the javelin and ninth in the 200-metre.

Other members of the Oceanside Track and Field that took home medals include nine-year-old Connor Scott, who finished first in the 800-metre walk.

Olivia Bewsey, nine, collected a silver after finishing second in the 1000-metre race. She also placed fourth in the high jump, fifth in shot put, and seventh in the 600-metre race.

The championships was held at the newly-resurfaced South Surrey Athletic Track and were hosted by Ocean Athletics. It featured more than 500 young athletes from across the province.
