Pabana bags Arrowsmith Tennis Club men’s singles, doubles titles

Weeklong championships feature exciting matches

The 2022 Arrowsmith Tennis Club Championships drew a good number of participants.

The weeklong tournament held at Springwood Park tennis courts from Aug. 22 to Aug. 27 was blessed with good weather and highlighted by exciting matches in men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

“It was a great club championship,” said Art McMillan, who co-organized the event with Rick Johnson. “The matches were exciting and there was a lot of good tennis talent. There was a good turnout of fans who came out to watch.”

Abhijeet Pabana clinched this year’s men’s singles title after beating Michael Collister in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the final. He also took home the men’s doubles title with partner Alan Oslie when they beat Collister and Peter Dutton 6-4, 6-3.

“It was great to be playing in a tournament again,” said Pabana. “There was no Oceanside Open so this is the only one I entered this year. This is a great club to be a part of. I met a lot of friendly people and I had some good matches. I had fun.”

Oslie won his second title of the championships when he paired up with wife Shelley in the mixed doubles final. They beat Danny Finch and Tanya Andreeva 6-0, 6-4.

The women’s doubles crown went to the pairing of Ada Sarsiat and Jill Trelawney who bested the tandem of Lis Bangs and Martine Blue 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

The B division men’s doubles was won by Paul Phelan and Patrick Plichon who beat Don Lefler and Michael Briones 6-1, 6-4.

Erica Monderman and Kathryn Campbell took home the women’s doubles after outlasting Andreeva and Kim Harris in a three setter.

In the B division mixed doubles Greg Back and Trelawney emerged as champions after beating Art McMillan and Martine Blue in a closely contested three setter.

McMillan said the championships would not be possible without the help of the many volunteers and support from club members.

“A special thanks to all the folks who help organize the tournament, the BBQ and the food and refreshments,” said McMillan. “All in all I think everyone enjoyed themselves on a beautiful day.”
