The fun and challenge of lawn bowling will be yours to experience on April 19 and April 20.
The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club, located at 149 Stanford Ave E, is holding its annual open house. This two-day event runs rain or shine from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Lawn bowling has aspects of curling, pool and chess all wrapped up into an intriguing and challenging sport. The game consists of aiming for a target that doesn't stay in place with a biased bowl that is elliptical rather than round. Because of the bias, the bowl travels in an arc rather than a straight line, and this provides the challenge.
It's a low-impact sport. It offers skill strength in balance and co-ordination, develops strategy skills, is very social in nature and is played in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It's a game that can be played at almost any age with club members ranging from 17 to about 85. The club also offers adaptive devices such as bowl lifters and UBI sticks (similar to those used in stick curling), which are perfect for people with knee and back issues.
Interested participants are asked to wear flat-soled shoes/runners and comfortable clothing. Certified coaches will be on hand both days to help participants as they roll a few bowls and get a feel for the game.
The club's official season kicks off on Sunday, April 27, at 1 p.m.
