Parksville’s Cascadia Martial Arts competitive team returned home with shining medals around their necks from the Canadian Taekwondo Championships in Toronto.

Junior fighter Oliver Anderson took the silver medal in the 55-59 kilogram weight class in the recent men’s junior competition. He had a good lead up to the final when he first beat Ethan Rafique of Dragon Taekwondo Academy from Ontario 2-0 to advance to the semifinal. He faced Sidharth Vasdev of Woo Kim Langley Taekwondo and prevailed with a 2-0 decision. In the final, Anderson fought well but narrowly lost 2-1 to Jordan Boodoo of Son’s Taekwondo Academy from Ontario.

In the Cadet division, Matteo Bennett finished first in the light heavyweight class to earn him a spot in the Canadian cadet team that will compete at the Pan Am Cadet Championships in Costa Rica in June

Oscar Brown competed in the junior 73-78 kg division took on Balvir Dhillor of Son’s Taekwondo. He lost 2-o to end up with a bronze medal. Danielle Easthom also collected a bronze after losing to Tehya Scott of Niagara Taekwondo.

Sydney Easthom also took home a bronze medal in the female junior 55-59 kg division after losing to eventual champion Gabrielle Beaulieu of Club Taekwondo Lac Beauport in a close fight. According to coach Dustin Fee, Easthom took the first round but dropped the second round. In the tie-breaker golden round, both were equally match and it ended in a 3-3 tie. But Beaulieu was awarded the win by superiority due to a spin kick.

Meanwhile, Cascadia Martial Arts will hold the 2022 Island Open Taekwondo Championships on May 14 after two years of not being able to stage the event due to COVID-19.

The club owners are happy to see this tournament return. It will feature two events, Poomsae (fighting patterns) and sparring. Organizers are expecting competitors from the Island as well as from the Lower Mainland. They are limiting the number of participants to just 75 athletes.

The competition will also be a fundraiser for Cascadia Martial Arts with all proceeds to go towards purchasing an electric-scoring equipment for its competitive team and Vancouver Island athletes.

Registration is now open with the deadline set for May 9. Those interested in competing can register at https://events.membersolutions.com/event_register.asp?content_id=87556
