Pickleballers pack the park

Local PGOSA squad shows they have what it takes to shine

The lacrosse box down at Parksville Community Park was packed last Friday as 46 players plus family and spectators turned out for the PGOSA Oceanside Pickleball Club’s first ever tournament.

A mixed doubles format that ran from 9 a.m. to noon under overcast but dry conditions, games were to 11 points or 15 minutes in length, and each team played six games.

“It went great -- very successful,” one pleased pickleball club president Gereth McCaskill said after, adding “the mayor came and threw the first ball and we followed the tournament with a pot luck luncheon.”

Finishing first overall and taking home the handmade hardware were Ada Sarsiat and Dieter Giese, while Diane Stoutenberg and Pat McPhalen took second place, and Dianne Kilby and Mike Davies third.

Good news for the pickleballers is that the season doesn’t end until Sept. 30.
