Vern Chang goes for the pin on Hole #6 during QBMGC Men’s Club championship action on Sunday.

The greens were the best they’ve been in years and 36 players turned in a great pace at this years Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club’s Men’s Club championship.

A four-round 32 hole event played out over Saturday and Sunday, the long-running in-house tournament for bragging rights went off without a hitch said Bob Benning, QBMGC Men’s Club captain.

Saturday morning tee-off was 7:15 a.m., and Sunday saw an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

“The pace of play was wonderful for both days — day one we averaged four hours for the field, and on day two we averaged three hours and 45 minutes, which is terrific,” Benning said after, then made the point “it’s the fastest pace we’ve had for the championships in years.”

QBMGC dates back 99 years, and the men’s club championship almost as long.

Fast forward to the weekend and the overall club champion for the second straight year was Les Pockett who fired a three-under par 67 on day one, and a 78 on day two, for a five-over total of 145.

The tournament has awards for the top two players in all five divisions.

Les was top dog in Division A, and runner-up was former club champion Peter Drummond who was four strokes back at 149 (73,76).

Locky Hay won Div. B at 162 (80,82); runner-up was Walter Teichgrab at 164 (81,83). Drew Braid finished first in Div. C at 169 (83, 86), and runner-up was Gunter Fissler with a 172 (84,88). In Div. D, Doug Ebbett finished first with a 171 (86,85) and the runner-up was Jerry Kitzler at 176 (85, 91).

An award was also presented to the overall Low Net winner (gross score minus handicap), taken by Ethraim Kubai at 132 (69, 63) who led the field by three shots.

“The two days were wonderful for weather, and the golf course was in the best condtion that it’s been in for a men’s club championsjps for the last eight years.”

The QBMGC Men’s club, which numbers 88 members this year, started up in mid-April and runs through to late October.
