Popular Vancouver Island Race Series set to start with Harriers Pioneer 8K

Registration online now open

The Vancouver Island Race Series is entering its 43rd year.

The eight-race series offers distances from five kilometres to a 21.2K half-marathon and is open to all levels from beginners to elite level runners. The races are Harriers Pioneer 8K, Cobble Hill 10K, Cedar 12K in Nanaimo, Hatley Castle 8K in Colwood, Port Alberni Paper Chase 15K, Comox Valley RV Half Marathon, and Synergy Health Management Ltd Bazan Bay 5K in Sidney.

The annual race series often draw over 60 running clubs from Vancouver Island and the Mainland every year including the Oceaside Running Club Association.

Runners accumulate points in each of the race they enter and the points are tallied in the end to determine the individual overall series champion, age division winners, as well as club champions.

In 2022, Oceanside Running Club Association finished 14th overall out of the 63 clubs that participated in the series. In the individual standings, Nanoose Bay’s Jill Davies placed second overall in the women’s 75-79 age group while Mary Beil, who is now a Parksville councillor, finished fifth in the women’s 65-69 division. Shawan Petraschuk placed ninth overall in the men’s 45-49, Chris Greenway was eighth in the men’s 65-69.

The Harriers Pioneer 8K race will kick off the 2023 Vancouver Island Series on Jan. 8 at North Saanich. It is also serves as the 2023 provincial 8k championships and is also included in the BC Super Series.

Registration for the Harriers Pioneer 8K, which is also in its 43 years, is now open. Those wishing to enter this race should register online at https://raceroster.com/events/2023/64388/2023-harriers-pioneer-8k as race day registration will no longer be offered. This will allow smoother race day operations as it would no longer require volunteers to show up early and also avoid the long lineup.

Those taking part in any of the races, headphones or earbuds will not be allowed while racing.
