Qualicum Beach goalie at training camp with Montreal Canadiens

LaCouvee angling for spot with AHL Laval squad

Goaltender Connor LaCouvee of Qualicum Beach is currently attending the main training camp for the Montreal Canadiens.

The Qualicum Beach hockey player was re-signed by the NHL team last June after making a strong impression last season when he played 14 games with the Canadiens’ affiliate team in the American Hockey League, the Laval Rocket. He went 7-5-2, posting a 2.49 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.

The Canadiens offered LaCouvee a minor league contract with the Laval Rocket.

The 25-year-old, who went undrafted after playing in the BCHL with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Cowichan Capitals, is now battling for a full-time spot with the Rocket.

LaCouvee is competing against 2017 seventh-round pick Cayden Primeau, who is touted to be the Rocket’s main starter this coming season, and Michael McNiven, who is after the No. 2 spot.
