Residents and visitors are invited to celebrate the official opening of the newly redeveloped Qualicum Beach skatepark.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the new recreational facility, located behind the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre, on Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m.
The project will provide recreational amenities for youth and families in the community. In addition to a modernized skatepark, the project delivers broader improvements to the Community Park, including accessible pathways that link the Civic Centre parking lot and playing fields, as well as multipurpose seating for both the skatepark and nearby amenities.
The project was funded through a $1.2-million allocation from the town’s Community Amenity Contributions and a grant under the provincial Growing Communities Fund. In addition, the Qualicum Beach Skaters contributed $130,000, which supported enhancements including coloured concrete and landscaping. Local contractors and suppliers also generously provided discounts and donations to help bring this vision to life.
“This skatepark is a win for youth, families, and the whole community,” said Mayor Teunis Westbroek. “It’s a project built with passion, teamwork and true local spirit.”
“The opening of the Qualicum Beach Skatepark is the result of years of advocacy, fundraising, partnerships and community efforts," said Lindsay Reed from the Qualicum Beach Skaters group. “QB Skaters is proud to have played a part, building on the work of those who came before us and alongside us. Skaters are excited to have a place that reflects their voice, creativity, and strength.”
