The 55+ BC Games will take place in Abbotsford Aug. 22-26.

Preparations for the annual senior sporting event is now underway.

An area representative is currently being sought for the Parksville Qualicum Beach region to assist with the promotion of the games and also publicizing the success of Zone 2 (Vancouver Island North) in the medal count during the games, which aim to improve the health, lifestyle and image of the 55+ population.

Zone 2 also includes Bella Bella, Bella Coola, Bowser, Campbell River, Comox, Courtenay, Cumberland, Gabriola Island, Gold River, Ladysmith, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Powell River, Tahsis, Tofino, Ucluelet and adjacent Islands.

Over 500 participants and supporters from Zone 2 attended the 2022 games in Victoria, bringing home 225 medals (97 gold, 78 silver and 50 bronze) across 25 sports.

Zone 2 placed 4th overall, closely matching the medal count for the much larger populated zones in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. No matter where the games have been held since their 1988 inception, Zone 2 has always made a strong showing and is a proud contender to be reckoned with.

Success is partly due to a dedicated and fun group of volunteers who organize participants into upwards of 30 sports with multiple age categories and events. Each year Zone 2 counts on new members getting aboard to help promote involvement and manage competitors.

Volunteer coordinators are needed to help with the following sports: 8-Ball, Darts, Floor Curling, Horseshoes, Mountain Biking, Snooker, Sturling and Whist.

The main role of a sport coordinator is to help enroll people in their sport and organize playdown events, if needed, to determine who earns their spot to compete in the games. Newcomers are welcome and highly encouraged, as support and guidance to carry out the coordinator role is always available.

Zone 2 is also seeking area representatives for Campbell River-Port McNeill and Powell River.

If you will be 55 or older by Dec 31, 2023 and are interested in getting involved, contact the Zone 2 team at: zone2info@55plusbcgames.org.
