Oceanside’s Peewee B Sharks were home for a double header and a good test against the first place Peninsula Warriors Saturday as they gear up for the playoffs.
The locals lost the morning game at Howie Meeker arena by a bunch, but bounced back in game two when they came up on the short end of a hard-fought 9-5 final.
“Awesome effort,” Sharks’ assistant coach Mike Adamowski confirmed after the final whistle of the set. “We ran with the other team and we kept it close,” he said, pointing out the keys to keeping it close were being able to keep up to their top runners, and the play of their goalie (Eli Adamowski), who faced a lot of rubber.
Also earning props for their efforts on the floor was offensive stalwart Dawson Fyfe at attack, and D-man Zach Wheldon, “who constantly disrupts our opponents who are 30-40 pounds heavier,” along with Tyler Smith who notched his first-ever goal (a booming screen shot that got past the Peninsula goalie to the cheers of the hometown fans), along with fellow first-year standout Arthur Miller who has been good for a couple of goals a game this season.
Adamowksi said the team, which pencils in six first-year players, continues to improve and have fun. The young Sharks are currently sitting fourth in the 12-team Mid-Island league at 7-5-1 with two regular season games remaining.
