Special Olympic swim re-starting

The Oceanside Special Olympic swim program has started again for the session, and 18 participants turned out for their first day back.

The Oceanside Special Olympic swim program has started again for the fall session, and 18 participants turned out on Monday for their first day back.

“A great turnout,” said longtime local volunteer coordinator Gerri Thompson, adding the team swims Mondays at 1:30 p.m. and Fridays at 2:30 p.m. at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre.

“Athletes can sign up for once or twice a week, to swim lengths, learn techniques, learn from the swim coaches, exercise, make friends, and work towards goals of Provincial and National Games.

“We had a very successful Provincial Games this summer,” said Thompson, pointing out  two of their swimmers, Mark Blasco and Amanda Stewart, have been chosen for 2014 National Games next summer.

In the meantime, “we are always looking for coaches, for swimming and our other sports, to assist our athletes, for one hour a week.”

New, or current Special Olympic athletes can find out about the year-round programs by emailing Gerri at gerrithompson@shaw.ca.
