The Special Olympics Oceanside Charity Golf Tournament was a “hole-in-one” success.

While final figures are not yet in, all points to superseding last year’s totals, thanks to the generous donations from the community and the giving spirit of the 120 people in attendance.

Despite inclement weather at various times, all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the greens at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort. In both spirit and numbers this year’s event set another milestone.

Special Olympics athletes were there to greet golfers as they registered, providing information, taking delight in showing their photos on the display stand and reminding golfers that their support helped them achieve their dreams of participating in competitions….of course winning medals doesn’t hurt either.

During dinner, participants enjoyed a short video depicting all the sports the athletes play and the sheer enjoyment on their faces was a pleasure to see and reminded us of why we volunteer for Special Olympics. One of the highlights of the evening was an inspiring speech by Kerri Lipsack, an Athlete Leader who partakes in almost all the sports.

“I love Special Olympics because it’s a lot of fun, I get to be with my friends, I love to compete and I like being active and healthy,” said Lipsack.

“It gives me opportunities to travel, learn new sports, make new friends and support other athletes. Special Olympics is awesome because it helps athletes to develop confidence, makes you stronger, provides social opportunities and improves sports skills. It lets you be part of a team and encourages you to do your best.”

At the end, she received a standing ovation, seemingly overwhelmed by the reaction, but in truth it is we who are overwhelmed and so very proud of her and all the other athletes’ accomplishments.

One hundred per cent of funds raised at this. — the only fundraising event of the year — will once again support the 50 athletes in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area, from their participation in competitions (travel, uniforms, accommodation, and meals) to opportunities to learn about being Athlete Leaders and community ambassadors.

When local coordinator Jacquie Cameron speaks to groups, there is usually an athlete leader as well, who shares personal stories about their involvement in Special Olympics and what it means to them.

As Lipsack mentioned, Special Olympics could change people’s lives, too. If anyone would like to get involved with SO Oceanside as a volunteer, as a coach or at a special event, please contact us at sobcoceanside@gmail.com or contact the local co-ordinator, Jacquie Cameron at 250.-94-9868. If you know an individual who could benefit from our sports programs, please send them to us.
