VIJHL: Oceanside Generals roll to 7-0 win over Nanaimo Buccaneers

The Quality Foods Oceanside Generals blanked the visiting Nanaimo Buccaneers 7-0 in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action Wednesday (Jan. 26) at Oceanside Place.

The high-octane Generals offence was simply too much for the Buccaneers, who were outshot 62-15. It was Oceanside’s second consecutive win against the Buccaneers and fifth in a row overall.

The Generals had rookie netminder Matthew Spencer-Dahl of Qualicum Beach in goal and he turned away 15 shots to earn his first career VIJHL win and shutout.

Forward Carter Johnson sparked the Generals’ offence with two goals and two assists.

The Gens went launched 23 shots in the first while allowing the Buccaneers just four. Jacob Thomas opened the floodgates with a goal, followed by a shorthanded effort by Brady O’Brien to make it 2-0. Captain Brett Arnet extended the lead 3-0 a minute later to close out the period.

The Buccaneers put up some resistance in the second period but were not able keep the Generals from stretching their lead to 5-0 with Johnson and Miles Carson each netting a goal.

In the final frame, the Generals limited the Buccaneers to just one shot while adding goals from Johnson and Evan Dyce.

On Friday, the Generals head to Port Alberni to take on the Bombers at the Alberni Valley Multiplex at 7 p.m., then the next day, it’s their turn to host the Bombers at Oceanside Place at 7 p.m.
