Caroline Bernard and her mother will run along Highway 19A, on Sunday, Nov. 1, to raise funds for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
So far they’ve already raised more than $1,900 for MADD, and plan to keep going until the day.
According to Caroline, the Deep Bay Volunteer Fire Department will support them and provided a truck each for the pair to run beside that displays a banner with a message on impaired driving.
Caroline’s mother, Margarita, will run 10 kilometres along the Island Highway, and start at the Deep Bay fire hall at approximately 10:20 a.m. She’ll head north for five kilometres, then turn around and run back.
Caroline will start her 18-km run at the Horne Lake turnoff at 9:45 a.m., and continue along the Highway 19 until the Cooke Creek turnoff, then head down Highway 19A and turn onto Gainsberg Road.

Both runs will end at 5040 Thompson Clarke Drive West, at approximately 11:30 a.m. Caroline and her mother are going to wear white shirts that have a message against drinking and driving for passing drivers to read.
Caroline’s father, Margarita’s husband, was killed by a drunk driver in 2016. His birthday had been in October, and they both wanted to do something to honour his memory. Since they’re both runners, they decided to do a run as a tribute, as well as raise funds for MADD.
“This organization has supported us immensely over the last four years. And we want to give back in some way, as well as spread the message that drinking and driving in unacceptable,” said Caroline in an email.
