“The shelves are bare, the lowest I ever remember,” said Major Rolf Guenther of the Salvation Army Food Bank.
He said despite some successful recent food drives they are facing serious shortages right now, so they are appealing to the public for food or cash donations.
“This is always a bad time of year, people are on holiday or doing other things,” he said, so the donations are always lower, but the demand doesn’t change much.
They get a big influx of donations around Christmas and Thanksgiving, “but as far as we’re concerned it’s Christmas 365 days a year.”
He also suggested that the plethora of food drives, while essential, may be causing some local food drive fatigue.
They are in particular need of specific items such as peanut butter, Sidekicks (rice or pasta), Mr. Noodle, Alphagetti, pasta and sauce, tomatoes, canned fruit and Hamburger and Tuna Helper.
The food bank helps an average of 400 families a month, up more than 35 from last year.
