Trout and bass are biting in nearby lakes. There’s sea-run cutthroat in the rivers and estuaries looking for salmon fry.

During the summer and fall season, five species of Pacific salmon return to Vancouver Island coastlines and rivers. This is when avid anglers cast their lines hoping to catch a few.

If you’re interested in fly fishing, the Mid-Island Castaways Fly Fishing Club may be able to help you. The sport is not only for the boys.

The club reports that today, some of the best fly fishers in the world are women. And also many manufacturers of fly fishing equipment tailor their creations for them.

The Mid-Island Castaways Fly Fishing Club is holding its annual Introduction to Fly Fishing course in early May 2022. It covers basic fly casting, safety, selection of equipment, tying knots, fly selection, fish and stream ecology and much more. Also included is a trip to a river to learn about aquatic ecology and how to fish flowing water. Loaner fly rods will be provided for students to use during the course.

Enrolment in the course requires membership in the Mid-Island Castaways Fly Fishing Club, plus a modest fee to cover course expenses.

If you are interested in taking this course you can fill out an application at the fly fishing shop in Qualicum Beach (A Blaze in the Northern Fly, located at 8-698 Beach Rd.). Class size is limited to 20 and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
