• B.C. Mines Minister Bill Bennett and Health Minister George Abbott flew to Kimberley to help deal with the sudden deaths of four people at the closed Sullivan mine. Two of the people killed were ambulance paramedics, responding to reports of workers requiring assistance. The workers died of cardiac arrest. The two paramedics trying to aid the fallen workers, also died.

• A promotional tour for McLean Mill National Historical Site in Port Alberni arrived in Parksville. Featured was a restored 1948 Hayes logging truck. The project took 10 years and $6 million to complete. It was the only steam-powered sawmill remaining in Canada.

 • Comedian Bob Hope agreed to help Qualicum Beach celebrate its 50th anniversary. 

The town had received a letter from the renowned humourist, agreeing to drop in to participate in one of the celebrations. Hope had fished and golfed in the area frequently before.
