There’s reason to celebrate for Parksville’s Mount Arrowsmith Brewing, winners of a World Beer Award for the second year in a row.
Their Jagged Face IPA (India pale ale), which head brewer and co-owner Dave Woodward describes as a “West Coast, hoppy, bitter IPA,” won Canadian Silver at the awards.
Last year, the brewery won World’s Best Blonde. For Woodward, it’s validation their hard work is paying off, especially after just two and half years of being open.
“I feel like we’re making darn good beer, and it’s good to be recognized and people are coming and enjoying it, so it’s great,” Woodward said. “We’ll just keep doing that here.”

Looking ahead, co-owner Dan Farrington said the brewery is releasing five or six new beers in the next year. They’ll continue to focus on using locally harvested ingredients.
Their newest beer launched Sept. 18, a Grand Fir Brute IPA.
“Dave and Wes, one of our assistant brewers, went out and harvested some grand fir and then they processed it down and then infused it in the beer,” said Farrington about the brewing process. “It’s a lot of neat, West Coast style stuff.”
“It’s kind of my spin on things,” added Woodward. “I like using things that are in season and are gatherable in the environment — to infuse with and make different flavours.”
You can visit Mount Arrowsmith Brewing from Sunday to Thursday (11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.) and on Friday and Saturday (11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.).
