Parksville groups to provide free bottles of water during extreme heat

Salvation Army, task force on homelessness to help keep people hydrated

The Mt. Arrowsmith Salvation Army, working in partnership with the Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness, will be providing bottled water to those who may not otherwise have access to fresh water on hot days this summer.

OTFH, through the federally funded Homelessness Partnering Strategy Program, will provide the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen with water bottles for distribution to vulnerable residents during extreme heat. HPS also provides other supplies to homeless and at-risk of homelessness throughout the year.

The program will unofficially begin on Friday, June 25 with four-dozen bottles of water to be given to guests of the Soup Kitchen at the Salvation Army Community Church on 187 Alberni Highway, Parksville.

Representatives from OTFH and the Mt. Arrowsmith Salvation will hand out reusable water bottles, cooling cloths, bottled water, and snacks each week during lunch service, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday except stat holidays.

The partner organizations are also looking at ways to provide water on Saturday and Sunday, as the extreme heat continues.

“We are grateful for the partnership with OTFH, which allows us to help those in need in our community cool off and stay hydrated on hot days,” says Bonnie Brown, business manager, Mt. Arrowsmith Salvation Army.

“With the rising costs of supplies, this is truly a blessing to our clients without putting pressure on our limited resources.”

The Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness is a collaborative group of dedicated individuals and organizations addressing homelessness together.
