Parksville mayor Ed Mayne has proclaimed May as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month in the city, in a effort to raise awareness of a disease that affects over 90,000 Canadians.
MS is a chronic neurological disease impacting an estimated one in 400 Canadians and, on average, 12 people are diagnosed every day.
Symptoms vary and may lead to problems with numbness, co-ordination, vision and speech, as well as extreme fatigue and even paralysis. There is no known cure for MS.
Since 1948, the MS Society of Canada has contributed $140 million towards research. All funds are raised through annual events such as the MS Walk, MS Bike and A & W Canada’s Burgers to Beat MS.
