Open sesame! You don’t need the magic words to find the gateway into a different world. The Parksville Museum opens for the season on Thursday, May 2, according to a news release.

Time travellers of all ages are invited to visit the authentic heritage cabins to experience a glimpse into the lives of the community’s earliest residents. The museum is accessible to people of all abilities.

Admission is by donation. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday to Monday. (Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

“Each of the heritage buildings has its own story to tell,” said Susan Wismer, president of the Parksville & District Historical Society, using the Montrose School as an example. “Kids love to sit in the well-used desks and check out the no-tech classroom objects used by the youngest of our area’s pioneers. And parents appreciate the museum’s park-like setting, where you can visit the new, open air Mosaic forestry pavilion, compare notes on the museum’s scavenger hunt, or gather for a picnic.”

The museum’s signature outdoor events are back this season, too. The summer music series will be featured in July, while Railway Day returns in August.

More details to follow closer to the dates, but Wismer adds, “we’re very excited about the calibre of talent we’ve been able to attract this year and think this may be the best concert series the Parksville Museum has hosted so far. We’ll be posting all the details on our website: (www.parksvillemuseum.com); and on Facebook, in the coming weeks.”

The Parksville Museum is located on the corner of Highway 19A and Northwest Bay Road, adjacent to the city’s Visitor Centre, with street parking on Northwest Bay Road.
