Two recent Parksville Qualicum Beach graduates are this year’s recipients of the Joy MacKay Memorial Scholarship, ECHO Players has announced.
Tatum Howell, a graduate of Kwalikum Secondary School, and Maximillian Hannah, a graduate of Ballenas Secondary School will each use the $1,000 scholarship to support their continuing studies in the performing arts, according to a news release.
Howell, who graduated high school a year early, is completing prerequisite courses at Vancouver Island University, with plans to attend the University of Saskatchewan next year to pursue a music degree.
Howell is also preparing for the Grade 9 Piano Exam, studying Advanced Music Theory and taking French Horn lessons to prepare for music auditions. During high school, Howell was involved in the band and choir program.
Hannah is pursuing a biology degree, with a minor in theatre, at the University of Victoria. He was an active participant in Whalebone Theatre Productions at Ballenas Secondary and ECHO Youth Theatre.
Both recipients were class valedictorian.
