Organizers from Herring Aid have come together to plan a Sunday rally in Qualicum Beach, in support of the protection of Pacific herring.
One Pacific herring fishery remains on the west coast of British Columbia. In December 2019, PacificWild sent a request to suspend the fishery.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has given the green light to fish the Pacific herring fishery.

“I fully support the call by 53Vancouver Island municipalities and the Islands Trust in their resolutions for a suspension of the Salish Sea herring fishery in keeping with the importance of applying a precautionary approach until the stocks have had a chance to rebuild. Further, I urge the government to provide meaningful financial compensation to local fishers affected,” said Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns in a January 2020 press release.
The rally will be on Sunday, March 1 between noon and 3 p.m. on the Qualicum Beach waterfront near the former Beach Hut site. Displays and information about herring in the Salish Sea ecosystem will be on-site.
