They describe themselves as a fusion of rock and awesome.  The Coalition band is playing their first gig of the new year at the Rod and Gun on Friday, Jan. 6. If you like to listen to a mix of covers and hits you’ll recognize and want to dance to, check out The Coalition. It’s difficult to pigeon-hole The Coalition into a certain genre of music.

Picture a band that sounds like a mix between Sublime, The Beatles, and Rage Against the Machine. With Dave Lettinga — lead vocals and guitar, Malcolm Shoolbraid — drums and vocals, Ross Duncan — lead guitar and vocals and Michelle Duncan — bass and saxophone, the band consists of four Salt Spring Island musicians playing cover tunes from the ‘80s and up.

They refer to themselves as a super group and will be rocking the Rod and Gun Friday night. Michelle, who is married to Ross said the band has been together for a year and she said they like to put their own spin on the covers they play.

“Our music is eclectic. We like doing mash ups to make it more interesting,” she said.

Michelle said they have some danceable reggae but also play some edgier rock mostly from the ‘90s.

As for being married to the singer in the band she said it is all good.

“There is no drama in our band.  We are pretty tight friends and it is an excellent group to play with.”

On Sat., Jan. 7 at the Gun it is full on hip hop with mix masters from Party People. DJ Anger who is a familiar name in Victoria’s hip hop scene will be scratching and mixing it up along with DJ Trever who is also well known in the Victoria club scene.
