Comedians Dave Nystrom and Ty Lemmon visit Parksville Jan. 29

Big Beast Comedy Tour making four Island stops

Comedians Dave Nystrom and Ty Lemmon will bring the funny to Parksville’s Rod & Gun on Jan. 29 as part of the Big Beast Stand-up Comedy Tour.

Described as “a tall drink of funny”, Nystrom has appeared at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival and on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, as well as his own special on the Comedy Network, according to a news release. “He performs all over the world in an effort to evade his four children,” the release continued.

In 2006, Nystrom was brought on as a writer for CBC’s This Hour has 22 Minutes, during which he won a Canadian Comedy Award and a Writers Guild of Canada Award.

Nystrom, who is based in Calgary, said he wanted to be a comedian from a young age.

“Ever since I was a kid, I think eight or nine years old,” he said, and recalled listening to his dad’s Don Rickles album, although many of the jokes went over his head at that age. “It’s all I’ve wanted to do since then.”

His comedy routine is inspired by his life and experiences, more than news or world events.

“I talk a lot about being married and having kids,” he said. “Different experiences.”

One of the best things about being a comedian is touring and visiting new places, big and small, doing stand-up in beautiful small towns he would have never found otherwise. Victoria and Ottawa stood out as favourites.

“Ottawa is a great comedy town and I think it’s because it’s a very reserved, conservative populace there,” Nystrom said. “A lot of government workers and things like that. When they go out they’re just so ready to laugh.”

Nystrom said the most difficult thing about his profession is maintaining a good work/life balance.

“I think comedians identify their entire world and entire personality and everything they are connected with being a comedian,” he said.

That way of identifying can be destructive, he added.

“I’ve really tried to maintain a home life and cultivate my home life that’s completely separate from the world of comedy.”

Nystrom will be backed up by Ty Lemmon, who has worked with such big names as The Trailer Park Boys, Ed the Sock and Kenny vs Spenny.

Parksville will be last stop on an Island tour that also includes Nanaimo, Port Alberni and Lake Cowichan.

The laughs start at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $26.74 and available online at Eventbrite.
