Errington’s War Memorial Hall celebrated its 100th year anniversary.

The Aug. 21 celebration included live music, a centenary cake and a tribute to Bob Herbison, a 42-year-member who passed away in September 2021.

“It was amazing. We had well over 100 people in attendance,” said organizer Laurie Mitchell. “It was the old-timers and the new-timers.”

A memorial plaque, written by Herbison’s daughter, was put up in the hall.

The day also included a re-enactment of the establishment of the War Memorial Hall, through the hall’s board meeting motions in 1919 to the establishment of the hall on March 24, 1922. Nine actors participated, including one who played the role of the Nanaimo Daily Press reporter who wrote about the event.

The names of every person who sat on the hall board executive, from 1922 to 2022, are now displayed, etched in wood, in the hall, along with the number of years they served.

Students from the Heartwood home-school group sang a song and buried a time capsule, which will be opened in 20 years, according to Mitchell.

Musician Gerry Barnum was going to perform a song about Errington, but was not able to attend, so the song’s lyrics were read out loud.

A centenary dogwood tree will be planted at the playground which is attached to the hall.
