Middle school looking for retired trades people

Adults with trades awareness are being sought to host a booth at Qualicum Beach Middle School for an event June 24.

Adults with trades awareness are being sought to host a booth at Qualicum Beach Middle School for an event June 24.

The event is called YES 2 IT (Youth Employment Skills to Industry Training) and it is designed to increase awareness of the trades.

Retired tradesmen or hobbyists are needed with a willingness to talk and engage the kids. Adults will need to supply the tools, display and products for students to try a hands-on activity. Food will be provided throughout the day. Grade 7 and 8 students in the district will come through the school trying a minimum of three trades at the event.  Another 10-15 booths will have displays from the RCMP, fire departments and post secondary institutions.

It is estimated there will be over one million job openings in B.C. between now and 2020, 43 per cent of those in trades and technical training occupations. Skilled workers need to be trained to fill those jobs.

For more information and to take part in the event email Stephen Stahley at sstahley@sd69.bc.ca or call (250) 752-5651 ext 155.
