Multi-instrumentalist and award-winning musician Shari Ulrich will be in Parksville, Aug. 8.
The Shari Ulrich Trio, which includes Cindy Fairbank on piano and accordion and Kirby Barber on bass guitar, will perform a night of three-part harmonies at Knox United Church located on 345 Pym St., at 7:30 p.m.
Juno-winner Ulrich has been touring, writing and making music for decades, with 26 albums, including nine solo projects, under her belt.
Most recently she released Back to Shore in 2019, her third album recorded with daughter Julia Graff, also a multi-instrumentalist, who began accompanying Ulrich on stage at the age of 12.
Less than a year later the COVID-19 pandemic shut down events across the world, giving Ulrich a rare opportunity.
“I really enjoyed stopping for the first time in my life,” she said. “And I really enjoyed being home and not traveling. But being back at it I feel a renewed appreciation for live music and the interaction with the audience and I think I’ve also discovered, because I’ve been at it for so long, that my audience has sort of grown up with me.”
Ulrich, who lives on Bowen Island, did some, but not many, virtual performances to stay connected with her audience.
For years she has started each performance with a rendition of ‘This Life’ from the album Everywhere I Go.
“It has the perfect feel for starting a show,” Ulrich said. After decades of writing music, Ulrich said each song that makes it onto a set list is one of her favourites.
She especially enjoys playing ‘Love is Everything’ live because of its production and simplicity.
Ulrich, Fairbank and Kirby have played as a trio for about six or seven years. Ulrich and Kirby met while playing in the bluegrass group, the Highbar Gang. She later met Fairbank, a primary school music teacher, when the latter visited the family home to record part of an album with Ulrich’s daughter, Julia.
Ulrich hopes to finish writing some new music later this summer after touring.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30.00 and are available online and at Close To You Boutique and Fireside Books in Parksville.
