Letter: We all pull together or we pull ourselves apart

I cannot agree more with the need for a roundabout at the junction of Village Way and the Highway.

I cannot agree more with the need for a roundabout at the junction of Village Way and the Highway.

The degree of acrimony over the project at the base of Memorial however, triggers alarm. Why so much negativity and scorn over what is actually a pretty small project? Why can’t we have both?

Issues like this often create divides within a community for no good reason. It’s dismaying to see it happen here, as it has all too often in other communities. Would it not be more productive to circulate a petition to support of a new project rather than to condemn something far more complex than a mere roundabout?

It appears that the genesis of the Memorial project came from the need for sewer upgrades and foreshore protective measures. Our municipality worked to secure grant money from other levels of government - helping pay for these upgrades and clearly living up to their fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers in doing so.

Not being “in the room”, it’s likely some bright light said: “Hey – while we have the road all torn up, why don’t we upgrade that intersection to a roundabout?” This is the kind of forward thinking we should be encourage. Over the last thee decades, it appears to have greatly enhanced the infrastructure and services of Qualicum Beach. Council has been punching above their weight on this kind of stuff.

All those concerned about this issue, should reconsider the negative attacks on council, mayor, staff and those who support the project. Petition to get an upgrade of the Village Way intersection instead. We are seeing far too much divisiveness and tribal fragmentation in the world today - we don’t need to foster it here.
