No to marina expansion

As a longtime resident of Nanoose Bay in the Beachcomber area, I vehemently oppose the expansion of the current marina as planned.

Contrary to the hopes of the planner, I do not want any further obstruction of my view of Northwest Bay. I am a sailor, but I do not want to hear a greater volume of clanging mast lines or engine noise, or to be distracted by increased power boat traffic using the ocean in front of my home as a permanent passageway. I do not want to experience a fourth consecutive summer disrupted by loud construction noise due to marina breakwater or dock extensions. My property value and enjoyment of the peaceful ocean side beauty of my outdoor living space depend on this view.

These are threatened by the encroachment of a commercial dock with its concomitant pollution, noise, vibration, sediment, and traffic that have been scientifically predicted to degrade the ocean floor and natural landscape, and to endanger eel grass and other delicate marine life. It is unfounded by evidence, absurd, and dangerous to think that invasion of the bay by marina expansion and increased usage will not adversely disturb its delicate ecosystem.

As well as my serious concerns about the value and quality of my property, I am considering the beauty and health of our lovely bay for future generations to enjoy, including my grandchildren and those of my neighbours. With the proposed extension of the marina business, the associated limitation of water sports for residents (kayaking, swimming, canoeing) will be irreversible. Prevention is crucial. This is not supported by the changes required for increased commercial gain within a primarily residential, natural, and beautiful area on the Beachcomber side of the bay.

As an environmental public health specialist and researcher in health promotion and disease prevention, I urge that no further marina expansion be permitted.
