Re: ‘Weather disasters are not new’ (Letters, PQB News, June 6)

The letter to the editor submitted by Al Greir, city councillor, is certainly entertaining and provocative. There are not two sides to the climate debate any longer.

I suppose it is forgivable for him to have missed reading the seminal work of the U.N. in 1987 when they released of the Bruntlandt Report (Our Common Future) during his past 35 years of research. But his inability to connect to the current science onthe rapidly increasing CO2 in our atmosphere with human activity really puts his credibility in doubt.

Our youth and their science teachers are well-informed on what’s at stake on our beleaguered planet. They rely on peer reviewed scientific journals, one wonders at the councillor’s sources. He would have been wise to greet the students and hear their message when they arrived at the city hall on May 24.

Among the chants were “ban plastic bags” which he voted against, despite decrying ocean pollution in his letter.

The will is there to make the transition to cleaner energy. Don’t let the fossil fuel industry set the agenda. The students’ banner “THE CLIMATE IS CHANGING, WHY ARENT WE?” says it all.
